Offshore tank container inspections

Offshore tank containers typically transport fuels such as helicopter kerosene and other hazardous materials. Precise inspections of frames, lifting components, and tank bodies keep containers safe, certified, and operational. We inspect frames and lifting gear annually, and tank bodies every 2.5 to 5 years.
Control Union consolidates all inspection and maintenance activities into a single visit.

Control Union

    Compliance through accredited inspections

Control Union operates globally as a recognized ABS Container Certification Firm (CCF). We conduct periodic tank container inspections directly on behalf of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and approve them ourselves, no separate external surveyor required for final sign-off.
As a member of the International Tank Container Organisation (ITCO), our inspections seamlessly align with current industry standards and best practices. The result: one fully accredited inspection cycle that meets IMDG, ADR, and RID requirements without additional coordination.

Inspection and maintenance in one visit

Control Union replaces seals, gaskets and appendages during the inspection teardown, so the tank leaves the workshop fully maintained without a second appointment.

    2.

Aligned frame and tank body intervals

Annual frame and lifting-gear checks run alongside the two-and-a-half-yearly tank body inspection, consolidating multiple compliance obligations into a coordinated schedule.

    3.

    Multi-skilled certified inspectors

Each inspector covers lifting gear, frame structure and tank body disciplines, reducing the number of specialists needed per visit and cutting mobilisation costs.

    How we work

    Towards control, insight, and certainty

The strength lies in the combination of inspection expertise, advanced data systems, and global practical experience.

    Step 1

The tank container is placed on a test stand and fully disassembled so inspectors check every component and replace worn seals or gaskets.

    Step 2

After reassembly, Control Union pressure-tests the tank vessel with air or water to confirm structural integrity before release.

    Step 3

Digitally signed ABS-approved reports upload to the ISO 27001 secured client portal, accessible around the clock for audit and fleet management.

    The proof to your promise

    Cost-efficient, independent, technically complete

Control Union delivers fully accredited offshore tank container inspections that combine independence, in-house ABS sign-off and integrated technical services in one efficient process.

    • With our ABS-authorised surveyors on staff, Control Union signs off inspections internally, delivering significant cost savings compared to hiring external classification surveyors for each tank.

    • No affiliation with insurers or maintenance contractors keeps every inspection finding fully objective and defensible during regulatory audits.

    • Valve testing, tank vessel thickness gauging and seal and part replacement run within the same inspection window, so tanks return to service technically complete.

    Frequently asked questions

Offshore tank containers typically carry fuels such as helicopter aviation fuel. The inspection covers the tank body, frame, lifting gear and all appendages to meet IMDG, ADR and RID requirements for dangerous goods transport.

Control Union processes on average one tank container per day, including disassembly, inspection, minor maintenance, pressure testing and reassembly. Scheduling is planned in advance as same-day bookings are typically not feasible.

Internal structural repairs to the tank vessel fall outside the inspection scope and are outsourced to specialist contractors. Control Union documents all findings in the report so operators can arrange targeted repairs efficiently.
